The New Orleans Museum of Art is New Orleans' most senior art museum and has strong holdings in the areas of French and American paintings and art, Japanese art, African art and artifacts, photography and fine crafts. Among some of the most remarkable works are paintings by French Impressionist Edgar Degas, who visited relatives in the city in the winter of 1872. In fact, he lived just down Esplanade Avenue where the museum is now. NOMA also has works by masters such as Picasso, Braque, Dufy and Miro. Another rare collection comes from the Russian imperial jeweler Peter Carl Faberge, who created ornate eggs and other small pieces from precious metals and stones.

The Education Division at NOMA is dedicated to awakening the imaginations of children and adults through the visual arts. The Museum provides memorable art experiences which lead to greater awareness, curiosity and sensitivity.

Based around the philanthropy and donated collection of Roger Ogden, the Ogden Museum features the largest collection of Southern art on public display. Collections include roughly 3,000 pieces from the 18th to 21st century in all mediums, including painting, prints, sculpture, glasswork, photography, folk art and more. New Orleans artists are well represented.

The displays in the five-story museum change regularly. The current temporary exhibit features the glass sculpture of Richard Jolley. The Ogden Museum was in the works for almost ten years. The high profile location just off Lee Circle includes three wings with the second two due for completion in the coming year.
