An intimate view into the lives of plantation owners and slaves in Antebellum Louisiana
Evergreen Plantation is a present-day working sugar cane plantation, and the most intact complex in the South with 37 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including her 22 slave cabins.Tours feature the 250 years of family ownership, its architectural significance, and its reliance on agriculture. Emphasis is placed on the plantation's dependence on slave labor and later the labor of freed African-Americans that was necessary at the time to operate such an enterprise.
Today, Evergreen Plantation remains a privately owned, working sugar cane plantation with people living and working on site. A popular filming location, many well-known movies and shows have used Evergreen such as "Django Unchained," "Roots," and "Free State of Jones."
