NEW ORLEANS NIGHTLIFE & MUSIC - New Orleans Musicians

New Orleans Musicians: Coco Robicheaux

What is the first word that comes to mind to describe New Orleans?
The velvet rut. You're stuck but it ain't so bad.

What is your secret weapon for thriving in New Orleans?
I drink Tabasco straight.

Why do you live here?
This is my spiritual home.

What is your best habit?
I'm an optimist.

Who's your favorite local character?
I used to play on Royal Street with Polka Dot Slim and Pork Chop. But they're gone now. And Professor Longhair was great.

What is your biggest eccentricity?
I see the spiritual in everything. My grandmother was a voodoo practicioner. She taught me that.

What is the most underrated thing about New Orleans?
Art in all its forms. This place is a well of inspiration.

What do you do on Mardi Gras?
I don't work. I like to get out early and make my way up St. Charles to see Zulu and Rex.

Who is your favorite local performer?
Snooks Eaglin. He's a wonder.

What is your favorite song about New Orleans?
Either Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans or Big Chief by Earl King.

What is one thing you would change about this city?
That's what I admire about this place, it doesn't change.

What is one thing you would never change about this city?
I don't have to worry about it. This place doesn't change. That's the curse and the charm of it.

What's your favorite Jazz Fest memory?
I was just standing there once and a golf cart dressed like a gator came up and made me a guest of the fest. We went and saw Etta James. And then we got locked in the trailer with James Brown. He was an hour late to get on stage.
