Jazz & Mardi Gras Indian Tour

Jazz & Mardi Gras Indian TourJourney back to the beginning of it all in world-famous Congo Square where slaves gathered on Sunday to socialize, sing and dance to the beat of tambourines and drums. Learn about the origins and traditions of the Mardi Gras Indians with a visit to a commemorative site honoring the legendary Chief of a Mardi Gras Indian Tribe. Travel back in time to the early days of Jazz while you stroll through Louis Armstrong National Jazz Park.

Get a sense of the world created by legendary local musicians like Jelly Roll Morton, Buddy Bolden, and Gospel Singer Mahalia Jackson. Take photos in front of the famous statue of Jazz icon Louis Armstrong as you stroll through the park. In historic Treme, you will explore the culture and heritage of the oldest African American neighborhood in the United States.

Witness first hand the post-Hurricane Katrina renaissance and revitalization of the community where Jazz was born. Discover the architecture and brightly painted Creole cottages that are characteristic of the neighborhood. If you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of a real Mardi Gras Indian!
